What I was trying to say is that it’s no use having an ~/Library folder if the /Users/~/Applications folder is gone.

Why.

Because until Lion applications with user preferences were stored in /Users/~/Applications, NOT in /Applications. Now /Users/~/Applications is gone in Lion.

The ~/Library folder is used by all/any application which has user preferences.

How does Lion now know whether preferences should be stored in ~/Library or in /Library if all applications are now supposed to be stored in /Applications?

the ~/Library can be seen without typing in the Go menu by holding down the option key
Then when open you can drag the folder to the FInder's sidebar to make it available all the time. There is also a Terminal prompt that can be used but that might not outlive a system update. (Then again it might.)

I don’t have any problem with ~/Library, it was Jem Cabanes on August 12 who asked about that. It is the disappearance of the /Users/~/Applications folder that is confusing me. :-)
