Off to do my Mtn Bird survey Friday afternoon on Mt Moosilauke. This is Mtn Bird survey for VCE. Used to do Monadnock Mtn in Lemington VT(12 yrs) En route, just west of No Haverill, on Rt 116, I saw a bird on a telley wire. suspicious. Turned around. Ea Meadowlark ! Then flew off to the mowed hay field. New route for me was up Beaver Brook Trial, beautiful trail following the brook , rather vertically to a AT shelter complete w/ thru- hikers. Up at 4 am to census 6 spots on a designated alpine route. 20 minutes at each. 10 target species. BiTh the biggest, Swainson's Th. Bl-poll Wa, etc The most striking thing for me was the difference in species. The alpine is different. No Veery like at our house, now there is Swainson's. These are alpine specialists. Pretty cool. I will detail list from the hike down, which started at 8:45 on July 2. Tie: 12 Swainson's : 12 Blackpoll Warblers. (I did se a few of each) 4 White thr Sparrow 5 Winter Wrens 2 DE juncos 1 Bl B Woodpecker (heard) 3 Yellow-bellied Flycs 2 Cape May Warblers 2 RB nuth 1 Br Creeper 2 Nashvilles 3 Yellow rumps 1 Bl Thr Blue 1 Re Vireo Brook noise drowned out a bunch.
