Sounds like you are running into the problem introduced by the 10.6.7 update. The problem is the fonts. The problem is well-known, but I can't recall a solution at this point, apart from downgrading to 10.6.6 or using different fonts.

So I was bitten by installing updates when proffered by Apple. Is there any relatively painless way to back off to 10.6.6 ??

Here's a work-around which replaces the ATS framework, and reportedly helps. If you don't like it, run the 10.6.7 updater to restore it to your current setup.

I have created a standard installation package to fix the Adobe font issue.

It replaces only the affected ATS.framework binaries with the 10.6.6 versions.
