A per-user scratch directory has been created for all AFS file storage accounts. The location mirrors the home directory layout, based on the first letter of the username. e.g. home is /afs/northstar/users/j/joeuser scratch is /afs/northstar/scratch/j/joeuser The initial setting is for each of these directories to be private and owned by the appropriate user. This may be changed by the owner. A total of 1TB, shared among all users, is initially available. Files in this space will be AUTOMATICALLY PURGED AFTER 1 MONTH OF INACTIVITY. Any recent file in a directory will render the whole directory 'safe'. Computing Services may revise the total space available or the purge policy as we see how this space is used. THIS IS SCRATCH SPACE: NO BACKUPS ARE MADE However, the usual daily snapshot will still be made, so accidentally deleted files can be recovered until the following modnight. Initially, users will be mailed with notification of pending expired directories, but we hope to fully automate the process eventually. -- Richard Brittain, Research Computing Group, Kiewit Computing Services, 6224 Baker/Berry Library Dartmouth College, Hanover NH 03755 [log in to unmask] 6-2085
