Job Opening: Director of the Language Resource Center, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University Summary: Serving in a wide range of pedagogical, technical, support, and managerial responsibilities, directs the activities of the Language Resource Center (LRC) (http://lrcnt.fas.harvard.edu/Home.html) and its support of more than forty languages. The LRC serves approximately twenty-five non-language courses. Requirements: At least three years experience managing a college/university language resource center; M.A. required in a language-related field, ABD or PhD desirable; experience teaching a foreign language or ESL at the collegiate level; experience designing and teaching others to use instructional technology and multimedia equipment; working knowledge of web site development and updating; advanced knowledge of standard office software such as PowerPoint, Excel, and similar programs and experience in using databases, such as File Maker; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; experience in managing, hiring, and conducting performance reviews of staff; documented fluency in at least one foreign language required, skills in additional languages highly desirable; knowledge and understanding of copyright laws regarding language instruction materials and educational use; and willingness to perform needed work to lead the LRC in the successful delivery of services to students and faculty. Duties and responsibilities: The Director of the Language Resource Center will oversee all activities of the LRC; regularly advise foreign language faculty on instructional material resources available in the commercial, non-commercial, and academic marketplace; consult with faculty on type and level of resources available to students and instructional staff; coordinate, in junction with the directors of language programs, the LRC's support of course curriculum; assist faculty in the development of instructional materials; prepare and conduct in-service workshops for teaching fellows and faculty; train faculty in use of instructional technology ; and work with Core Curriculum and other non-language professors in providing materials for their students. The Director will work with the LRC staff to ensure the reliable delivery of services and including, but not limited to, computers, servers, audio and video machinery, and additional equipment; hire, train, and supervise student staff; interview and recommend candidates for hire, train and supervise professional staff; propose and manage operating budget; and work with Media Production Center to coordinate the production and delivery of materials to be used in the LRC. The Director will also prepare a semi-annual newsletter and other sources of information to update faculty on new resources, changes in operation, and policies in the LRC; maintain the LRC's adherence to copyright laws; maintain knowledge of latest technology used in the teaching of foreign languages; maintain a catalog of available materials and conduct an inventory of equipment; conduct orientation sessions for new faculty and students; collect usage data and prepare semester and annual reports; and perform additional duties required to successfully operate the LRC.
