If that service doesn't exist for the senior or the cost is too high on a fixed income, POTS modems (Plain Old Telephone Service) can do a slow but often adequate job. 56K modems are still the highest speed. With a good PPP connection and good telephone line quality, great for e-mail and basic web browsing, painful for downloading big files of any kind. External modems for that vintage Mac still exist (using the old Mac serial port). If MacConnection/Warehouse/Mall doesn't have one in stock a place like Otherworld Computing or the place in Shreveport, LA (same place?) should.
