Job description

The Sustainability Coordinator for the Town of Hanover is for a knowledgeable, creative, organized, and passionate individual who has the skills and experience to direct and coordinate the Town’s significant sustainability efforts, working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to continue to help make the Town of Hanover a leader in sustainability and a driver of progress among community and regional stakeholders.


This position is responsible for the creation, management, and coordination of the Town’s Sustainability efforts, and has duties and responsibilities which include:


• Directs and coordinates the Town's sustainability efforts.

• Provides technical expertise and leadership to internal and external stakeholders in evaluating key opportunities to achieve sustainability goals, such as the "Ready for 100" goals and Master Plan goals.

• Provides onsite staffing and meeting support to Sustainable Hanover, its subcommittees, as well as other committees and boards as needed, which may include preparing and distributing agendas, providing technology and meeting logistic support, and/or writing and distributing minutes or follow ups.

• Provides regular reports on sustainability efforts and trends and special analyses and reports for the Planning Department, Public Works, the Town Manager and other departments as needed; provides technical assistance as requested and provides sustainability updates in for the Selectboard and other Town stakeholders, both in reports and at meetings.

• Designs and implements community outreach and engagement programming related to the Town’s sustainability efforts, including communications, social media, and writing and distributing web based content.

• Helps coordinate sustainability efforts among the Town’s departments and staff, boards and committees, and community stakeholders and groups working on sustainability initiatives with the Town, including attending various community meetings and providing regular updates to stakeholders.

• Maintains a current knowledge of professional, technical, and legal trends relating to sustainability issues.

• Directs the Town's efforts in securing, coordinating, and administering grants related to sustainability.

• Provides public facing engagement about the Town’s sustainability efforts, such as meeting with members of the public, and other local and regional stakeholders concerning sustainability and speaking to local media.

• Assists in sustainability related budgeting, including for capital improvements, by providing advice and feedback related to sustainability initiatives, equipment, vehicles, and facilities throughout the Town’s budget process.

• Performs related duties as assigned.

• Bachelor's degree, preferably in a course of study related to sustainability. Graduate degree preferred.

• At least three to five years of related work experience, preferably which includes experience related to sustainability efforts, project planning and management, community outreach, and municipal operations.

• Knowledge and passion of sustainability and renewable energy theories, principles, and practices.

• Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations regarding sustainability.

• Knowledge of municipal government operations.

• Skill in multi-stakeholder coordination and collaboration

• Skill in directing municipal sustainability work.

• Skill in project budgeting, management, and communication.

• Skill in operating a computer and related software and systems, such as Microsoft cloud products and ability to learn new commonly used systems.

• Ability to drive or access public transportation such as to be able to regularly attend Town, community and regional sustainability meetings throughout the Upper Valley.

• Ability to periodically work outside of normal hours as meeting schedules may require (Flex schedule allowed)
