(for maximum effect, imagine a mournful and slightly ominous piano playing as you read these first paragraphs)

It's cold and dark. Midterms are haunting you. Current events are haunting you. The idea of not having a snow sculpture is haunting you. You dream of spending spring break surrounded by warm weather and uncivilized wilderness, with friends by your side and a paddle in your hand. Alas, the applications have come and gone, and you are not signed up for any DOC trip over break.

But wait! In the last hour of your fading hope, a savior emerges from the gloom, an underdog stepping out from the shadow of Ledyard's whitewater spring break trip.

All is not yet lost, it says. It's voice is kind and confident, but promises adventure. You find yourself trusting it absolutely. You can still be saved, it promises. All you have to do is...fill out my application.

That savior is...

LEDYARD FLATWATER SPRING TRIP

Featuring a beautiful river...

[cid:a59f0496-6b98-469f-82c9-e4b12aec5fdc]

the only naturally occurring class III rapid in Florida aka Big Shoals (equally fun to carry your boat around or attempt to run)...

[cid:e76ed7af-1d33-4cc9-bd13-e573e7a6a7d2]

a swamp (the pretty, super diverse wildlife reserve kind)...

[cid:e4fed91e-c629-4141-b8f9-cf80c2f8b488]

possible alligator sightings...
[cid:5bfb5d07-b4c3-4624-bb78-38032b4e04f6]

And also WARM WEATHER! We're talking southern Georgia and Florida here, people!

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANT INFO

What: canoeing in a variety of water conditions, camping in increasingly removed locations, and listening to Rory Gawler, Assistant Director of OPO, sing "Way Down Upon the Suwanee" for several days straight (or so he has promised)

Where: Starting in the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia (one of the largest intact freshwater ecosystems in the world!), then out and down the Suwanee River into Florida

When: The last week of spring break (gives you a chance to go home and see your parents/pets/friends' parents/favorite hometown tree first) aka Sunday March 19th through Sunday March 26th

Why: Because you like to have fun? Because you like the outdoors? Because you want to challenge yourself in an attainable yet satisfying way? Because you want to improve your canoeing and/or expedition skills by going on an extended trip with Rory and taking advantage of all his knowledge and expertise? Because it will be warm????

Who Is Leading: Me (Maddy), a spunky and dry humored Ledyard flatwater leader, and Rory Gawler, the aforementioned experienced and knowledgeable expedition canoeist*, OPO Assistant Director, and all around cool dude.

Who Should Apply: Everyone! This trip is open to all levels of canoeists**, and we encourage beginners as well as more experienced boaters who are looking to add another dimension to their paddling experience/skills to apply.

How Much: Great question! This trip has never been run before, so some details are still being worked out (how exciting! how confidence-inspiring!) and these foggy details include the exact price, but we are committed to keeping costs to $350 AT MOST, plus up to $200 per person for flights, and DOC financial aid WILL APPLY to anyone on financial aid from the college. (if cost is still a barrier, let me know and we can see about working things out on a confidential, case by case basis)
