Film Events This Week:

Monday, February 16th, 6-7pm: Dartmouth Film Society Meeting (Wilson 205)

The Dartmouth Film Society is a student organization that meets once a week to discuss the films playing at the Hopkins Center, debate important issues (like whether Ghostbusters is the best film of all time), write program notes, critique new movie trailers and vote on series proposals for future terms. You don’t have to be an expert - you just have to have an opinion!

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, Free and Open to the Public)

Sabra traces Field’s early life, move to Vermont, artistic influences, success, love and loss—all of which continue to shape her talent and sensibility. (57m plus bonus footage) Post-film discussion with Sabra Field. THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT. https://hop.dartmouth.edu/Online/film_special_sabra

Internationally renowned DV8 Physical Theatre has produced 18 highly acclaimed dance-theatre works and four films for television, which have garnered over 50 national and international awards. This newest work authentically depicts real-life stories, combining movement and spoken word to create an intense and moving theatrical experience. Friday, February 20th, 7pm: Hop Film: “Force Majeure”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

The sun is shining on spectacular slopes, but an impending avalanche upends everything for a vacationing Swedish family. As the mother runs to protect the kids, the father runs for his life. Embarrassed laughter follows when the anticipated disaster fails to occur; and yet the family's world has been shaken to its core. This viciously amusing dramedy comes down on the essential hollowness of traditional gender roles like the avalanche that proves to be its inciting event. D: Ruben Östlund, Norway/Sweden, 2014, subtitled, Runtime: 118m

Saturday, February 21st, 7pm: Film Special: “Selma”

(Spaulding Auditorium, Hopkins Center for the Arts, $5 for students)

Selma is the story of a movement and a brilliant chronicle of the tumultuous three-month period in 1965 when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (David Oyelowo) led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay tells the real story of how a revered leader and visionary, along with his brothers and sisters in the movement, prompted change that forever altered history—proving that one dream can change the world. Also starring Carmen Ejogo, Giovanni Ribisi, Alessandro Nivola, Tim Roth, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Oprah Winfrey. D: Ava DuVernay, US, 2014, Runtime: 128m

Sunday, February 22nd, 4pm: DFS Film: “The Passion of Joan of Arc”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

Mark Twain once said, “Whatever thing men call great, look for it in Joan of Arc, and there you will find it.” Joan is not the exception that proves the rule—she had the brave, independent heart that beats in all women—in all people. This film about the life of the French martyr is one of the indisputable masterpieces of the silent era. With a wealth of unflinching close-ups, it creates a frightening intimacy between Joan of Arc and her tormentors. D: Carl Theodore Dreyer, France, 1928, Runtime: 77m
