J'ouvert is a pre-Carnival tradition of celebration. During the early hours of Carnival day, people hit the streets to dance, fueled by the exhilaration of the occasion. Masqueraders, covered in paint, glitter and mud, move to the rhythms of the accompanying drums, steel bands and calypsos.
