Film Events This Week:

Mon Apr 21, 6-7pm: Dartmouth Film Society Meeting (Wilson 205) The Dartmouth Film Society is a student organization that meets once a week to discuss the films playing at the Hopkins Center, debate important issues (like whether Ghostbusters is the best film of all time), write program notes, critique new movie trailers and vote on series proposals for future terms. You don’t have to be an expert - you just have to have an opinion!

Mon Apr 21, 7-9:45pm: Cine Salon (Lost Films Found): Jonas Mekas: A Happy Man (Mayer Room, Howe Library) At 91, Mekas’ latest film is a perfect summation of a lifetime spent championing the little events of everyday life. “Jonas Mekas calls his blissed-out new movie Out-Takes From the Life of a Happy Man. It’s an honest, direct title for a transcendently lovely and delicate work created from images that didn’t make it into the filmed diaries he made from 1960 to 2000.” (Manohla Dargis, New York Times)

Mon Apr 21, 7-8pm: Music Video Monday (Digital Lab, Black Family Visual Arts Center) Teams will compete to guess what the music video for a song would (should?) be. Bring a team of friends! Pizza included.

Tues Apr 22, 4-5:30pm: Processing: Programming for Audio Visual Art (Digital Lab, Black Family Visual Arts Center) Processing is a computer language often used by video and audio artists to create data-based, interactive, and/or mechanical pieces. It can be used to make unique and interesting work - check out some of these projects that used processing: http://processing.org/exhibition/. Space is limited, so email [log in to unmask] to sign up.

Thurs Apr 24, 1-2pm: Workshop Topic TBA (Digital Lab, Black Family Visual Arts Center)

Fri Apr 25, 12pm: Master Class with Filmmaker Thomas Allen Harris (Film Studio, Black Family Visual Arts Center) Harris is the director of an important new documentary about African-American photography and also directs an impressive online project devoted to diasporic family stories. Fri Apr 25, 2-3:30pm: Screening of Through a Lens Darkly (Tupelo Music Hall, White River Junction VT) A rich and lyrical tapestry that is both personal and epic in scope, Thomas Allen Harris’s extraordinary documentary Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People is a unique examination of they way black photographers - and their subjects - have used the camera as a tool for social change from the time photography was invented to the present. A group of students will be driving to White River Junction to attend the screening. If you would like to be part of this group, please RSVP by replying to this email.

Fri Apr 25, 3:45-5:15pm: Digital Diaspora Family Reunion (Tupelo Music Hall, White River Junction VT) The innovative transmedia companion to the film, Digital Diaspora Family Reunion (DDFR) re-imagines the social network by inviting audiences to participate in building the One World One Family Album (#1WORLD1FAMILY) by uploading and sharing their own family photos. Started in 2009, DDFR has held 13 live events, in 5 cities, generated 8.2 million media impressions, conducted over 600 interviews, gathering over 6,500 photographs in the process, which are part of a virtual user-generated family photo album that compliments the content of the film and celebrates shared values which underlie the American Experience. DDFR is open to everyone and audiences are invited to upload images to Instagram using #1WORLD1FAMILY and #DDFRtv tag. A group of students will be driving to White River Junction to attend the event. If you would like to be part of this group, please RSVP by replying to this email.
