ANGELS IN AMERICA

Mormonism. Gay rights. Liberal versus Conservative ideology. The upward consolidation of wealth and political power. These key issues of today—especially prominent in the just-concluded US presidential election—can be seen in stark relief in Tony Kushner’s 1993 Pulitzer Prize-winning Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, Part One: Millennium Approaches.

Angels depicts resounding themes of death, religion, politics and history playing out in the lives of a diverse group of New Yorkers circa 1985. With Reagan in the White House and an as-yet unchecked AIDS epidemic ravishing the population, the play’s distinct, memorable characters and haunting special effects come to life under the hand of award-winning director Dunne (Hairspray/Rocky Horror Show). Angelsincludes some adult language and one scene of silhouetted simulated sex. It’s recommended for patrons ages 13 and up.
