Ah, but it does exist (for at least one year now). Try these places:
http://www.apple.com/
(From the Apple Home Page, go to The Apple Store; go to the Apple
Store for Education; click on Higher Ed. Faculty . . .; find
Colorado College; select Software; CLK 2.0 = US$113.00.)
[If your Bookstore doesn't have it in stock, they should be able
to order it.]

I haven't heard of any font problems -- so long as we're talking only
about the fonts that install with the CLK, and not any third-party fonts
-- but I have heard of problems related to the Simplified Chinese Input
Method being more than quirky.

Actually, that should be SOP whenever installing/updating ANY software.
If Mr. Smitheram could elaborate on his comment as well provide a source
or two (even a juicy anecdote would do), we might have a case for the
impossible mating of MacOS 8.6 and CLK 1.2. (Obviously, I'm speaking from
the dark ages of technology -- I'm working with 8.5.1.) Until then, it
sounds like you should consider a clean install of the entire system and
giving CLK 1.2 another go.
One question, though, how was MacOS 8.6 installed on the computer? Did
this person do the upgrade personally, or did it come with the computer?
If they have the MacOS 8.5 CD, I'd say update to MacOS 8.5.1 and stick
with that. MacOS 8.6 is just too buggy to make it worth the upgrade, from
the reports I've heard.
In the meantime, take a look at the following articles from Apple's Tech
