I had a thrill yesterday. I noticed a rustling in the brush on Warbler Way. I saw a bright red splash of color. Through the binoculars I saw a male Pileated Woodpecker with its bright red head and red cheeks deep in the brush. 15 years ago we logged the pine. The Pileated was hard a work at the base of an old stump digging out insects. It was well camouflaged by all the brush that has grown up around the stump. Another great birding moment!
Later that morning I was down in the Taylor Floodplain Preserve listening and catching a glimpse of a Northern Waterthrush while a Rose Breasted Grosbeak sang happily in a prehistoric looking crack willow. All was well until my Bernese plunged into the Pompy disturbing the peace.
