Hooded mergansers are cavity nesters, so what looked like a female sitting on a tussock like nest at Cranberry Pond was a resting bird. The “nest” location would truly be at great risk for predation, and a “sittin duck” situation. I reconsidered what I had seen and wrote later on UVB, then checked my field guide!! The learning about birds and their behaviors ( and re- learning)
is one of the fun challenges of birding.
Separately, I saw my first Red-shouldered hawk of the season on Wednesday afternoon at the top of Gap Road in Cornish. A pair nested in the area last year. A beautiful bird, calling loudly. I hope it was claiming territory for this season.
