Saw the Roseate Spoonbill near the Gorham Transfer Station today. When I
first arrived (at 11:30 AM) it was upstream from the Androscoggin River
dam, in a side creek on the south side of a berm along the river. It
preened a little and also rested. After all the observers left except for
me and 1 other, the sun shone down on the bird and it became more active.
It flew 100 feet and landed on top of the berm, and then walked farther
upstream on the berm, foraging and preening in the grass. The grass was
taller than the bird, which made it difficult to see.
If you look for the bird, park outside of the entrance to the transfer
station (there are about 6 parking spaces), walk to the river edge and then
walk upstream. There is an active Osprey nest on the opposite shore from
where I last saw the Spoonbill.
