On my way to work this morning, I spotted dark phase Rough-legged Hawk hunting the small open field opposite Lily Pond. The bird was very dark except of a broad white trailing edge of the underside of the wing. Also the tail was dark with a broad white base, Typical of Rough-legs, while hunting it hovered like a kestrel, and at one point it descended rapidly on partially folded wing to the ground. Eventually, it flew off across the pond to some tall pines. I returned by the same route after work but failed to relocate the hawk. This is a NH first for me.
