Through sheer dumb luck and good fortune, I just had 3 unexpected finds at Pompy Oxbow (the strip of ag fields between Rt. 5 and the river 1/2 mile south of the Ompompanoosic rivermouth). In the hedgerow bordering the river and just east of the weedy strip of standing corn were a Nelson’s Sparrow and Dickcissel, both of which cooperated for excellent views. At the far south end, beyond the age patches now sprouting winter rye, I came across a Sora skulking in the wet meadow. It gave me a brief but clear view before disappearing.
Sparrow numbers are way down, but a flock of 400+ grackles filled the numeric void.
