Shortly after 4 pm this afternoon (Sunday Oct. 18) I was surprised to see an adult Northern Shrike perched for some moments in a tree bordering the backyard here in Norwich village. The black mask was quite conspicuous. A relative lack of barring on the underparts indicated that the bird was not an immature.
Other bird species in the vicinity around that time were Blue Jays, Black-capped Chickadees, a White-breasted Nuthatch, 2 American Robins, an American Goldfinch, and a Yellow-rumped Warbler. The only other bird seen anywhere near the shrike was a chickadee moving through the limbs some yards distant above and behind the shrike.
It's been a number of years since I last saw a shrike at this location. Previous records here were on December 31, 1995, and December 28, 2007.
