On Tuesday May 26, 2020, a Whip-poor-will repeatedly sang between 8:45 and 8:50 pm here in the village area of Norwich. Although the exact location of the bird could not be determined in the darkness, the song appeared to be coming from the tree line along the steep slope at the southern edge of Warner Meadow. At first, the song seemed relatively nearby, but after a brief pause, a time during which the bird was presumed to have been in flight, a fainter song resumed from a point seemingly many yards westward from the initial location. Although I could see no birds of any kind, the sky was still retained some weak residual light from the day. A Veery was calling and singing during the same time as the Whip-poor-will sang.

Hearing a Whip-poor-will here was quite unexpected because in more than 25 years of birding around this location in Norwich, I had not previously detected the species. Many years ago, while in southern New Jersey in the summer, hearing Whip-poor-wills was a daily occurrence. It was nice to hear again that characteristic song.
