For Saturday November 2, 2019, Mascoma Chapter of New Hampshire Audubon is planning a bird walk in Addison County, VT. An anticipated highlight are the spectacular Snow Geese, often present in great numbers. Other birds seen on previous equivalent trips have included a variety of raptors (sometimes including Rough-legged Hawk), a variety of waterbirds, even late migrating shorebirds. as well as other landbird migrants. We are very pleased that again this year Spencer Hardy will lead. This trip is free and open to the public. All experience levels are welcome. Walking is over level ground. Bring binoculars and, if available, a spotting scope. Bringing a lunch and drinking water are recommended. Dress warmly as wind chills in some years are winter-like. In the unfortunate case of adverse conditions such as a steady rain, steady snow, or hazardous road conditions, this event will be canceled.

Carpoolers are to leave at 7:00 AM from the parking lot at the west end of the Ledyard Bridge in Norwich. If coming from Hanover, cross the Ledyard Bridge, take an immediate right turn at the traffic light, and then an immediate left turn into the unpaved lot. . The carpooling group starting from Norwich anticipates reaching the goose viewing area of Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area along Route 17 in the town of Addison around 9:00 AM. We plan to return to the lot by Ledyard Bridge by 5:00 PM. The change from Daylight Saving to Standard Time comes during the following night.

For those planning to drive themselves, consultation of a map is recommended. (Note that this year our usual route over Rochester Gap is unavailable because of road work.)  A route for this year might be as follows. Take I-89 north in VT to Exit 3 in Royalton. Then follow Route 107 west into Bethel, there bearing south and continuing southwestward on 107 through Gaysville. Then take the next right onto Blackmer Boulevard which leads to Route 100 going north into Hancock. There turn left onto Route 125, continue over Middlebury Gap, and then on Route 125 to the town of Middlebury. There take Route 23 northwest into Weybridge, where Route 23 ends on Route 17. Take Route 17 west, crossing 22A in Addison. Continue west on 17 and, after a mile, look for the goose viewing area on the left (south side of the road).
