Nighthawks in good numbers flowing from southeast to northwest over the Union Village Dam. Parked up there for a couple hours tonight. Noticed from there that they were feeding for 10 minutes over the neighborhood of Bill Shepherd. Left him a voicemail, but suspect he was out looking elsewhere.
Interesting behavior. They seemed to be making a circuit going up the Pompy river valley and cutting right up the east branch, and then they’d reappear further east heading south toward the horse farms above the flats, then come back over the dam. Witnessed 4 of these circuits over the period from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. But I can’t be certain that they were the same birds making a whole circuit or multiple groups appearing so because of their different movements.
I laughed out loud when I saw them loiter over Bill’s place for 10 minutes.
Here is a picture of one of them.
