Stopped by the pond behind Walmart in West Leb around 2:30 today to look for the least bittern. It was not seen when looking from the parking space next to the propane tanks. Curiously, there was a large crawfish in the parking space that was nearly dead, as if it had been dropped there by a gull (but there was no gull evident). A minutes later, I got out of the car to look at flowers on the pond bank near its east end. As I did, I heard a single new-to-me, worried-sounding call from that end of the pond. I looked instantly and saw the least bittern being chased just above the cattails by an almost-the-same size male redwing, its epaulets brandished with great authority, but not calling. Both birds disappeared in the phragmites to the south. I have now seen the bittern twice in about 70 visits to the pond with the total viewing time probably less than 3 seconds. Fun!
