MERLINS:
For the first time in weeks, I didn’t take my big lens in the car, so of course we found ourselves in the parking lot of Crossroads Cafe in White River underneath a pair of acrobatic merlins. Managed to get a shot anyway by parking in the space nearest where one eventually perched. This was around 11 a.m.

NIGHTHAWKS:
I was heading north on Route 5 this evening around 6:45 in Norwich saw my first nighthawks of the year (had been trying quite a bit without success). Found the first few at Pompy Farms, which led me up the road to a group of a dozen or so in the next field. They drew me up to the flats, and remembering Bill’s note about Pirouette Farm, I headed up there. There were a couple in the field to the north, heading north, so I headed up Godrey Road and found the mother load in a field just to the left about a mile up. A few dozen hoovering up a hatch of something large - large enough some of them showed up in the pictures.

Discovered it is really very difficult to photograph nighthawks. Like children after birthday cake, but much faster. Did get some pictures.
