This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, August 13th,
2018.
A NEOTROPIC CORMORANT was photographed on the Androscoggin River in Gorham
on August 2nd. It has been seen at numerous locations along the river during
the past week and was last reported on the 13th. The bird has been most
commonly seen perched on orange safety buoys just above the Gorham
Hydroelectric Station dam on Power House Road. This is also the location of
the Gorham Transfer Station and there is signed River Access parking at the
entrance, so park here and walk to the dam. The bird has also been seen on
the river from a roadside picnic area that is located along Route 16 about
1-mile north of the junction with Route 2. The picnic area is located on the
east side of Route 16 and is closed and under construction, so you may need
to park on the west side of Route 16 near the Verizon store and walk to the
picnic area. Use extreme caution when crossing Route 16!
A WOOD STORK was located at the Pickering Ponds in Rochester on August 9th.
It has been reported multiple times during the past week, and was most
recently seen on the 13th. The bird has been most commonly seen in cattails
located at the corner of the first pond closest to the entrance gate.
A pair of MISSISSIPPI KITES with a chick was seen in a nest near Madbury
Road in Durham on July 26th, and was most recently reported on August 13th.
To try to see the Durham birds, park at the Durham Town Library, walk out to
the road and watch overhead for soaring KITES. Two additional nests, each
with a chick being fed by 2 adult birds, were discovered in Newmarket and
Stratham and were last reported on the 13th.
2 LEAST BITTERNS were seen at the Cranberry Ponds located behind the Price
Chopper store in West Lebanon on August 7th, and 1 was reported again on the
10th.
An immature LITTLE BLUE HERON was reported from Pickering Ponds in Rochester
on August 11th, and 1 was reported from coastal Rye on the 12th.
A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen several times during the past week at
Kendall Pond in Londonderry, and was last reported on August 9th. Another
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen in coastal Hampton on the 10th.
A GREAT EGRET was seen in Newport on August 12th, and a GLOSSY IBIS was seen
along the coast on the 11th.
2 LEAST TERNS were seen in Hampton Harbor on August 11th.
5 WHIMBRELS were seen along the coast in Hampton on August 12th, and a
PECTORAL SANDPIPER was seen in coastal Rye on August 7th.
2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were reported from the Salmon Falls River in Dover
on August 11th.
A RED-NECKED GREBE was reported from the Lake Umbagog National Wildlife
Refuge in Errol on August 11th.
A BREWSTER’S WARBLER was reported from Pickering Ponds in Rochester on
August 10th, and 2 BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS were seen at the Freedom Town
Forest on the 11th.
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was reported from Ashland on August 13th.
2 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were reported from Black Cap Mountain in Conway on
August 9th.
Birders on a Granite State Whalewatch out of Rye Harbor on August 9th
reported: 40 CORY’S SHEARWATERS, 30 GREAT SHEARWATERS, 2 SOOTY SHEARWATERS,
1 MANX SHEARWATER, a PARASITIC JAEGER, and 20 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.
