This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, May 15th, 2017.
An immature male KING EIDER was seen off of Pulpit Rocks in Rye on May 13th,
and was relocated in the same area on the 15th.
A THICK-BILLED MURRE was seen off the coast in Rye on May 13th.
2 CATTLE EGRETS were seen at Great Bay Farm in Greenland on May 9th, and
were last reported on the 13th.
An immature LITTLE BLUE HERON was first seen in Errol on May 5th, and was
still present on the 10th. To look for the bird, park by the bridge over the
Androscoggin River on Route 26 just east of town, and walk west on Route
26/16 back towards town and the school for viewing. Today it was behind the
church across from the school (please be cautious of the school). The bird
may possibly be viewed by walking the snow mobile trail that follows the
river from the parking area by the river mentioned above.
An AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER was seen in Little Harbor in Rye on May 13th.
A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Hampton Beach, and an ICELAND GULL was seen at
Rye Harbor, both on May 14th.
A LAUGHING GULL and a NORTHERN GANNET were seen off the coast of Rye on May
13th.
10 ARCTIC TERNS were reported from Hampton Harbor entrance on May 13th.
36 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen at Rye Ledge in Rye on May 13th, and several
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were seen along the coast
during the past week.
A SANDHILL CRANE was seen in Lee in farm fields located on Route 155 at
Coppal House Farm on May 2nd, and was last reported on the 14th.
A BLUE GROSBEAK was reported from Barrington on May 12th.
There was an unconfirmed report of a male RED-HEADED WOODPECKER from
Rochester, and 1 from Back Mountain Road in Goffstown, both on May 10th.
A pair of BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS was seen on the Little Cherry Pond trail
at the Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson on May 13th.
2 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were reported from the Concord Airport on May 9th.
A PURPLE MARTIN was seen at the FunSpot in Weirs Beach on May 15th.
A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was reported from Round Pond at Pawtuckaway State Park in
Nottingham on May 9th.
An AMERICAN BITTERN, an EASTERN WHIP-POOR-WILL, a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, a
CAPE MAY WARBLER, 2 BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS, a BLACKPOLL WARBLER, a FOX
SPARROW, a LINCOLN’S SPARROW, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD were seen at the
Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson and the adjacent Airport
Marsh in Whitefield, all on May 13th.
2 AMERICAN BITTERNS were see in Chichester on May 11th, 1 was seen in Canaan
on the 13th, and 1 was seen in Sunapee on the 14th.
A GREEN HERON was seen at Bedell Bridge State Park in Haverhill on May 13th.
A male BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a SORA and an AMERICAN BITTERN were reported from
the Keene Airport wetlands on May 11th, and a SORA was reported from Surrey
Lane Marsh in Durham on May 12th.
A WILSON’S WARBLER was seen at Horseshoe Pond in Concord, and a BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER was seen at Boston Lot Lake in Lebanon, both on May 12th.
A WILSON’S WARBLER, a BLACKPOLL WARBLER, and an ORCHARD ORIOLE were seen at
Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on May 13th. An ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen in
Durham on May 13th.
A few FISH CROWS were reported from Durham, Hinsdale, and Rye during the
past week.
8 PINE SISKINS were seen at a birdfeeder in Richmond on May 9th.
6 BRANT were seen off the coast of Rye on May 13th.
A GADWALL was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on May 11th.
4 BUFFLEHEADS were seen in Lebanon on May 13th, 6 were seen in Orford on the
13th, 3 were seen in Lyman on the 11th, 1 was seen in Errol on the 11th, and
there were several seen along the coast during the past week.
Up to 40 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, including a pair building a nest, were
seen at Meredith Bay on Lake Winnipesaukee on May 15th.
Other spring arrivals of note during the past week included: BLACK-BILLED
CUCKOO, WILLOW FLYCATCHER, FOX SPARROW, LINCOLN’S SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW.
