This is a reminder that on Monday April 10, 2017, at 7:00 PM, Conservation Biologist Steve Faccio will speak on "Vernal Pools: Wicked Big Puddles or Critical Wildlife Habitat?" in the Mayer Room of the Howe Library in Hanover, NH. This free program is open to the public and cosponsored by the Mascoma Chapter of New Hampshire Audubon and the Howe Library. Vernal pools play an indsipensible role in the life cycle of many amphibian species. Steve Faccio from the Vermont Center for Ecostudies will focus on the ecology of vernal pools with an emphasis on the amphibians that depend upon them for breeding. He'll discuss the characteristics of vernal pools, the life histories and ecology of the unique assemblage of wildlife, both amphibian and invertebrates, that utilize vernal pools, and roles these small, inconspicuous wetlands play in our forest ecosystems. Steve will also discuss conservation issues surrounding vernal pools, including his research radio-tacking salamanders and investigating mercury levels in vernal pool "foodwebs".
Steve, a Cofounder of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies, is also well known for his long term monitoring studies of Vermont forest songbirds in relation to their conservation.
