This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, September 12th,
2016.

2 adult MISSISSIPPI KITES were seen several times during the past week
feeding a chick in Newmarket.

55 TURKEY VULTURES was seen soaring over Keene on September 5th.

A SANDHILL CRANE has been seen somewhat regularly in a hayfield along Route
127 in West Hopkinton and irregularly in nearby Elm Brook Park since July
19th. It was last reported on September 12th. Another SANDHILL CRANE was
seen briefly near Main Street in Rochester on September 7th.

reported: 2 POMARINE JAEGERS, a PARASITIC JAEGER, 2 BLACK TERNS, and a
RAZORBILL.

5 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were seen on Lunging Island, one of the Isles of
Shoals located off the coast on September 12th.

GULLS were seen along the coast during the past week.

5 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were seen along the coast on September 6th.

A HUDSONIAN GODWIT and 8 STILT SANDPIPERS were seen in Hampton Marsh on

A NORTHERN SHOVELER and 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were seen at the Rochester
Wastewater Treatment Plant on September 7th, and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER
was seen here on the 6th. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of
operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the
office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have
to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the
road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east of the plant, are not
gated, and are always open during daylight hours.

2 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Henniker on September 7th.

A BLUE-WINGED WARBLER was seen in Webster, and there were several reports of
migrating CAPE MAY WARBLERS, TENNESSEE WARBLERS and WILSON’S WARBLERS from
scattered locations during the past week.

The peak of COMMON NIGHTHAWK migration has passed with only small numbers
being reported during the past week, except for a flock of an estimated 150
seen in Peterborough on September 8th.

RAPTOR migration is under way with migrating raptors being counted daily at
the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough, including
452 raptors tallied since September 1st, and at the Carter Hill Observatory
in Concord, including 246 raptors counted since September 1st. Be sure to
visit these New Hampshire Audubon staffed observatories this fall season to
help out with the counts! Weather permitting; September 17-18 should be a
good weekend to count BROAD-WINGED HAWKS.

From 10:00 A.M. to Noon on Saturday September 17, the Mascoma Chapter of New
Hampshire Audubon is hosting a hawk watch at the Lebanon Airport. This event
is free and open to the public. Bring binoculars and scopes if available. In
case of inclement weather (such as heavy, steady, rain or persistent dense
fog), the watch will be held on September 18 with the same starting and
ending times. Directions: from Exit 20 off of Route I-89 in West Lebanon,
turn south on Route 12A. Then take the first major left onto Airport Road
and continue until reaching the airport, bear left, and pass the control
tower into the parking lot beyond. For more information on Mascoma Chapter
programs, please visit www.mascomabirds.org
