For the past few days, I have had a mysterious raptor calling behind my cabin. I have made several attempts to get a look at this bird, and only once did I get a glimpse. At that time, I made the assumption that it was a juvey Coopers Hawk.
Today, while sitting on my back deck, once again listening to the drawn out "whining" call, the mysterious raptor made an appearance in the tree right in front of me (in pursuit of a blue jay). At that moment I had no doubt what it was...a juvenile Goshawk!
I got such good looks at this bird, for it sat in the tree for at least 15 seconds before taking off.
I rarely see goshawks, let alone hear them very often. I'm so glad I finally saw this bird - that's a first for my backyard!
