This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, March 7th, 2016.
A TUFTED DUCK was discovered on Captain Pond in Salem on March 3rd, and has
been seen there on every day since then. This is an Old World species
regular to Alaska and a vagrant to the rest of North America. RING-NECKED
DUCKS are very similar in appearance and there have been up to 20 of these
present at the same time. Captain Pond has no public access. The best
viewing is from Hooker Farm Road. Please park on Carriage Lane, or Olde
Village Road. Please be cautious of traffic, and be respectful of private
property.
2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale
on March 5th and 6th, and 1 was seen on the Connecticut River in Charlestown
on the 6th. A SNOW GOOSE was seen in Hinsdale on the 6th.
A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE and 4 AMERICAN WIGEONS were seen on the
Connecticut River in Hinsdale on March 7th.
A female BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was seen on Great Bay on March 6th, and 2 RUDDY
DUCKS were seen on Great Bay on the 5th.
A pair of GADWALL was seen at Horseshoe Pond in Concord, and a pair of
NORTHERN PINTAILS was seen at Chapman’s Landing in Stratham, all on March
6th.
26 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen at Rye Harbor on March 2nd.
A GLAUCOUS GULL continues to be seen at the Seabrook side of Hampton Harbor,
and was last reported on March 6th.
An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on March
6th.
2 SNOWY OWLS were seen in the Rye Harbor State Park area, and 1 was seen in
the Hampton Harbor area, all during the past week. When viewing a Snowy Owl
please do not disturb the bird by approaching too closely, and please

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen along Kearsarge Mountain Road in Wilmot on March
4th, and 1 was seen at Flagstone Industrial Park on Bald Mountain Road in
Newport on March 6th.
An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen in Lee on March 2nd, and 1 was seen in Hollis
on the 5th. A MERLIN was seen in Newport on the 6th, and a PEREGINE FALCON
was seen in Rye on the 5th.
BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings from the past week included: 50 in Moultonborough
on March 2nd, 50 in Etna on March 1st, 550 in New London on the 4th, 200 in
Canaan on the 5th, and 11 in Newport on the 6th. These flocks have been seen
feeding on ornamental fruit trees.
4 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen in Jackson, and 6 RED CROSSBILLS and 6
EVENING GROBEAKS were seen in Errol, all on March 6th. 2 RED CROSSBILLS were
seen in Pittsburg on March 1st.
A COMMON REDPOLL was seen in Twin Mountain on March 5th, and a PINE GROSBEAK
was seen in Clarksville on March 4th.
4 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen in Charlestown on March 6th.
2 GRAY JAYS were seen in Pittsburg on March 1st.
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen in New London on March 6th.
4 FISH CROWS were reported from Durham on March 6th.
2 FOX SPARROWS were reported from Chatham, and 1 each was reported from
Wilton and Durham, all during the past week.
A WINTER WREN was reported from Mink Brook in Hanover, and 1 was reported
from Pickering Ponds in Rochester, both during the past week.
A KILLDEER was seen at Northwood Lake on March 4th.
A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was reported from Bow during the past week.
