I went down to Mink Brook this afternoon for the first time in two weeks. I found neither the Hermit Thrush nor the Winter Wren that Jeff reported, but I was pleased to find some Bohemian Waxwings among a group of Cedar Waxwings. The birds were perched in trees above the electrical substation by the parking area for the River Trail, right off Route 10. Initially the birds were moving around quite a bit, but soon they settled down, and then they stayed perched in the same place for as long as I watched them. This gave me a nice opportunity to count them: there were 6 Bohemians and 73 Cedars. I also got great views of both species, and a great chance to hear them calling. I like the sound of the Bohemians! Hopefully I’ll hear plenty more before the winter is over.
