Highlights among the 29 species at Campbell Flats this morning was a 
Clay-colored Sparrow at the southeast corner of the corn field, in the 
exact location where George Clark found a bird on September 26 (though 
it's unlikely this was the same individual). Eight sparrow species 
overall. Overall highlights:

Sharp-shinned Hawk  1
Eastern Phoebe  3
Ruby-crowned Kinglet  1
Eastern Bluebird  1
Hermit Thrush  1
American Robin  12
Common Yellowthroat  2
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle)  5
Chipping Sparrow  10
Clay-colored Sparrow  1     Seen clearly though briefly (4-5 seconds) through binoculars as it popped up in corn field 20 feet away, then flew into brushy edge of Ompompanoosuc River, where I could not relocate it. View was primarily frontal (rump and nape not clearly seen), but diagnostic features were overall buffiness of  face and upper breast-sides, pronounced pale brownish auricular patch accented by "mustache"and darker than surrounding buffy coloration of supercilium and underparts, and lack of a distinct eyeline. I had observed a flock of 10 Chipping Sparrows ~200 yards away several minutes earlier and this bird had a distinctly different feel ("jizz"). The fact that it was alone (other than nearby Song, White-throated and Swamp sparrows) reinforced the impression that it was a different species than the Chippings.
