Campbell Flats featured a great selection of birds were this morning,
with sparrows ruling the day. It was tough to identify many of them, let
alone get accurate counts, as they dove repeatedly into and back out of
the corn. The best activity was in the southeast corner of the corn
field, near the riverside opening with picnic table and boats. I never
glimpsed (or identified, anyway) the Clay-colored Sparrow found by
George Clark, but the area was absolutely hopping between 9 and 10 am.
Among 35 species, highlights included:
Cooper's Hawk 1
Northern Flicker 3
Eastern Phoebe 2
Blue-headed Vireo 1 sang several times
Red-eyed Vireo 2 both w/brown iris, eating black cherries
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 4
Eastern Bluebird 10 minimum number; a dispersed flock mostly feeding on fruits in canopy trees along river
Gray Catbird 6
Cedar Waxwing 20
Nashville Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 4
Palm Warbler (Western) 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle) 14
Chipping Sparrow 15 minimum number; many feeding on fruits in tree canopy along river; did not see Clay-colored Sparrow reported by George Clark
White-throated Sparrow 45 minimum number, many moving from riverbank vegetation into corn and back
Savannah Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 40 minimum number, many in corn
Lincoln's Sparrow 2
Swamp Sparrow 14 likely undercounted, several in corn
Scarlet Tanager 1
Northern Cardinal 2
Indigo Bunting 8
Red-winged Blackbird 30
Purple Finch 1 heard in flight
