This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, January 5th, 
2014.



A SNOWY OWL was seen several times during the past week at Ragged Neck in 
Rye, and was last reported on January 3rd. More than 10 SNOW BUNTINGS were 
seen here on December 30th.



A SNOWY OWL was seen at Hampton Beach State Park on January 1st.



A SNOWY OWL, a SNOW BUNTING, and 200 COMMON REDPOLLS were reported from 
Cates Hill Road in Berlin on December 31st.



A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen at the Dillant-Hopkins Airport in Swanzey on 
December 27th.



A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was reported from Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on 
January 1st.



A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was seen at Great Bay in Greenland on January 3rd.



A female HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen along the coast in Rye on January 1st.



3 RAZORBILLS, a BLACK GUILLEMOT, 2 BRANT, and 14 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were 
reported from coastal Rye on January 1st.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at the Fremont Conservation Land in Peterborough 
on January 1st.



An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Bicentennial Park in Hampton 
on January 4th.



A GLAUCOUS GULL was reported from the Seabrook side of Hampton Harbor on 
January 1st.



An ICELAND GULL was seen at North Hampton State Beach on January 1st and 
4th, and 1 was seen at Bicentennial Park in Hampton, on January 1st.



An ICELAND GULL and a GLAUCOUS GULL were seen at the Pickering Ponds in 
Rochester on January 4th.



A LAPLAND LONGSPUR and 200 HORNED LARKS were reported from Chickering Farm 
in Westmoreland on January 1st.



A flock of 130 COMMON REDPOLLS was reported from Westmoreland on January 
1st.



Flocks of PINE SISKINS were reported from numerous locations during the past 
week, including 25 on January 3rd in Walpole, 47 in Wilton on the 4th, 51 in 
Kingston on the 4th, 44 in Raymond on the 4th.



3 GRAY JAYS and a BOREAL CHICKADEE were seen on Mount Jackson in the White 
Mountains on December 31st.



2 GRAY JAYS were reported from Mount Starr King in Jefferson on January 1st.



A PIED-BILLED GREBE was seen from Adams Point in Durham on January 3rd.



2 GADWALL and a male NORTHERN PINTAIL were seen on Great Bay in Greenland on 
January 1st.



A female NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen at South Mill Pond in Portsmouth on 
January 1st.



2 RUDDY DUCKS and a GREATER SCAUP were seen at Seal Rocks in Rye, and a 
GREATER SCAUP was seen at Hampton Beach State Park, all on January 1st.



60 HOODED MERGANSERS, 45 COMMON MERGANSERS, and 125 MALLARDS were tallied 
above the Wilder Dam on the Connecticut River on December 31st.



A NORTHERN HARRIER was seen in Lancaster on December 30th.



A MERLIN was reported from Bartlett on December 31st.



A PEREGRINE FALCON was reported from Hampton on January 2nd.



An EASTERN SCREECH-OWL was reported from the coast on January 2nd.



Over 300 CEDAR WAXWINGS were reported from Laconia on January 1st.



Uncommon out-of-season sightings from the past week included: A flock of 16 
TURKEY VULTURES seen in Exeter on January 3rd. A COMMON YELLOWTHROAT seen at 
the Urban Forestry Center in Portsmouth on January 1st. A PINE WARBLER seen 
at a birdfeeder in Merrimack on December 31st. An EASTERN PHOEBE seen in 
Rochester on January 4th. A GRAY CATBIRD seen in North Hampton on January 
1st. A BALTIMORE ORIOLE seen in Exeter on January 4th. An EASTERN TOWHEE 
seen in Durham on January 4th. A female YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER seen in 
Derry on January 3rd. 2 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were in Greenland on January 
1st. A LINCOLN’S SPARROW seen in Greenland on January 3rd. Several reports 
of HERMIT THRUSHES and WINTER WRENS.



Highlights of the Sandwich Christmas Bird Count, held on December 28th, 
included: 7 BLACK SCOTERS, 26 HORNED GREBES, a MERLIN, a YELLOW-RUMPED 
WARBLER, 61 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 26 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 21 HOODED 
MERGANSERS, 4 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, 3 SONG SPARROWS, 37 NORTHERN 
CARDINALS, 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, a RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, 7 
COMMON LOONS, 2 BELTED KINGFISHERS, 390 COMMON MERGANSERS, 3 BALD EAGLES, 12 
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and 20 RED CROSSBILLS.



Highlights of the Errol Christmas Bird Count, held on December 23rd, 
included: 10 RED CROSSBILLS, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, a BARRED OWL, a RED-BELLIED 
WOODPECKER, an EVENING GROSBEAK, and 48 WILD TURKEYS.



Highlights of the Nashua / Hollis Christmas Bird Count, held on December 
27th, included: 2 WOOD DUCKS, 102 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 
23 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 11 HOODED MERGANSERS, 24 COMMON MERGANSERS, a TURKEY 
VULTURE, a NORTHERN HARRIER, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS, 52 
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 16 NORTHERN FLICKERS, 
78 HORNED LARKS, 38 CAROLINA WRENS, 3 WINTER WRENS, 192 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, a 
HERMIT THRUSH, 2 SWAMP SPARROWS, a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, a COMMON REDPOLL, 
a FISH CROW, a COMMON LOON, and an EASTERN SCREECH OWL.



Highlights of the Laconia Christmas Bird Count, held on January 3rd, 
included: 20 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, a CAROLINA WREN, a PINE WARBLER, a 
MERLIN, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, a HERMIT THRUSH, a 
NORTHERN FLICKER, a PINE GROSBEAK, 16 PURPLE FINCHES, 18 COMMON REDPOLLS, 
423 PINE SISKINS, 4 WOOD DUCKS, 28 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 2 NORTHERN 
PINTAILS, 4 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 10 GREATER SCAUP, a BLACK SCOTER, 260 COMMON 
GOLDENEYES, 207 HOODED MERGANSERS, and 154 COMMON MERGANSERS.



Results of the Isles of Shoals Christmas Bird Count, held on January 3rd, 
included: 17 CANADA GEESE, 3 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 4 MALLARDS, 1200 COMMON 
EIDERS, 17 SURF SCOTERS, 65 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 20 BLACK SCOTERS, 65 
LONG-TAILED DUCKS, 3 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 9 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 68 COMMON 
LOONS, a HORNED GREBE, 3 RED-NECKED GREBES, 3 NORTHERN GANNETS, 18 GREAT 
CORMORANTS, 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS, 126 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, 4 RING-BILLED GULLS, 
400 HERRING GULLS, 2 ICELAND GULLS, 45 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 17 
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, 4 DOVEKIES, 33 RAZORBILLS, 25 BLACK GUILLEMOTS, 2 
SNOWY OWLS, an AMERICAN CROW, 2 CAROLINA WRENS, a HERMIT THRUSH, an AMERICAN 
ROBIN, a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, 3 SONG SPARROWS, and 
3 NORTHERN CARDINALS
