Worthen Industries has been applying science and technology to develop high quality adhesives, coatings, extruded films, and laminated products since 1866. Since partnering with an innovative startup, Worthen is seeking a Project Engineer to work with their R&D group to support the development, scale up, and commercialization of a new adhesive device technology. The ideal candidate will excel at integrating the design and converting aspects of product development, be fully involved in every stage of the development cycle, and understand that new challenges will emerge as the scope of the project grows and new products are envisioned.

Responsibilities:

* Maintain the laboratory, testing equipment, chemicals, and lab supplies in an organized and safe manner.

* Formulate, compound, mix, coat, and cure liquid adhesive and coating samples on various fabrics as directed.

* Precisely cut coated samples to specified test specimen dimensions.

* Perform static shear, dynamic shear, quick stick, and 180° peel tests on specimens.

* Record all experiments, objectives, observations, test results, and conclusions in the laboratory notebook.

* Assist with interpretation of data and recommend next steps.

* Identify ways to improve experimental and testing procedures.

* Report on the project status during weekly conference calls, monthly group meetings, and quarterly R&D presentations.

* Meet directly with suppliers, customers, and corporate partners.

* Assist manufacturing departments in producing material for coating trials.

* Work closely and maintain relationships with all members of the team and employees at every level of the organization.

Requirements:

* Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Material Science, Engineering or related scientific discipline.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

* Ability to work both independently, with minimum supervision, as well as part of a multifaceted team of partners including those inside and outside the company.

* Experience or familiarity with lab mixing, coating, laminating, and extruding techniques.

* Working knowledge of pressure sensitive tape testing, IR, GC, DMA, DSC, and TGA analysis.

* Must have own, reliable transportation. Some local travel within New England will be necessary.

* U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
