This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, December 1st,
2014.
A flock of 24 SANDHILL CRANES was seen and photographed migrating south over
Hampton on November 27th. The flock has been seen again in Connecticut on
the 28th, and Pennsylvania on the 29th. This is a very large flock for the
northeast.
A juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen near the public boat launch at
Adams Point in Durham on November 10th and has been seen several times since
then. It was last reported on the 29th.
A SNOWY OWL was seen at Hampton Beach State Park on November 29th, 30th, and
December 1st, and a SNOWY OWL was seen frequenting fields along East Conway
Road in East Conway and Fryeburg, Maine on November 26th.
Both a dark-morph and a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK were seen near Rye
Harbor State Park and the adjacent marshes on November 28th. Both a
dark-morph and a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK were reported from Hampton on
the 29th.
14 BALD EAGLES were seen along the Androscoggin River between Berlin and
Errol on November 25th.
A female HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen in Hampton Harbor on November 23rd, and
again on the 28th.
A pair of BARROW’S GOLDENEYES was seen on Great Bay from the Great Bay
Discovery Center in Greenland on November 29th.
A EURASIAN WIGEON was reported from Great Bay on November 25th.
A SNOW GOOSE was seen with a flock of 35 CANADA GEESE on Lake Massabesic in
Manchester on December 1st.
A GADWALL was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on November
25th.
5 NORTHERN PINTAILS were spotted flying overhead in Walpole on November
30th.
A NORTHERN PINTAIL were seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on
November 25th. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are
7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be
out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders
to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at
Pickering Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always
open during daylight hours.
A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, 85 HOODED MERGANSERS, and 40 COMMON MERGANSERS were
seen gathering above the Wilder dam on the Connecticut River on the evening
of November 28th.
Late migrants seen at North Side Park in Hampton during the past week
included an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, a WILSON’S WARBLER, a “WESTERN” PALM
WARBLER, a “YELLOW” PALM WARBLER, and a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET.
An AMERICAN PIPIT and 12 SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from the coast on
November 28th.
2 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Lebanon on November 28th.
A late-migrating BROAD-WINGED HAWK was seen in Hampton on November 28th.
Late-migrating birds reported from Newington during the past week included a
GRAY CATBIRD, and 2 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS.
Other late-migrants included a BALTIMORE ORIOLE in Rochester on November
28th, and a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on the
28th.
Late-migrating HERMIT THRUSHES reported during the past week included 2 in
Newington on the 22nd, 1 in Plainfield on the 28th, 1 in North Hampton on
the 29th, 1 in Walpole on the 30th, 1 in Westmoreland on the 30th, and.1 in
Weare on December 1st.
2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were seen at the Seabrook Wastewater Treatment
Plant on November 28th.
A pair of RUDDY DUCKS, 2 SNOW BUNTINGS, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD were seen at
Great Pond in Kingston on November 28th.
There were several reports of FOX SPARROWS from scattered locations during
the past week.
