Despite wet conditions, I walked from County Road to the Bashon Brook
wetlands in Windsor this morning, hoping that this relatively large
wetland complex would produce some Windsor Co. wetland specialties. I
was not disappointed, as I found a single American Bittern and 2
Virginia Rails doing grunt displays. I listened and tried playbacks for
Least Bittern, Sora and Marsh Wren, but came up empty. Five Swamp
Sparrows sang from the emergent vegetation, and families of Mallards and
Wood Ducks were on the open water areas.
Returning to my car at 8:30 am, I was very surprised to hear a
Yellow-billed Cuckoo calling, followed by a singing Yellow-throated
Vireo. I got good looks at both. I was parked ~75 meters north of the
Barren Hill Alpaca Farm on County Road - not a site I'd have expected
either species
