Under cloudy skies with patchy fog, a Windsor County 2014 Birding
Quest bird walk was enjoyed by a dozen participants on Saturday
morning June 14, 2014, at the Windsor State Farms Corrections property
in Windsor, VT. A total of 34 kinds of birds were found. Special
thanks go to Chris Rimmer for completing the eBird report and to the
other coleaders, Ed Hack and Scott Johnson. Some highlights follow.
Sorry for a delay in issuing this report.
From time to time we heard the "winnowing" of a Wilson's Snipe. A
female American Kestrel was viewed at length from a distance as she
perched on utility wires. Flycatchers detected included Eastern Wood-
Pewee, two Willow Flycatchers, and an Eastern Kingbird. Singing mimids
included 3 of 4 Gray Catbirds and a Brown Thrasher. Six species of
warblers were found. A "winged warbler" was repeatedly heard singing
the song of a Blue-winged Warbler but could not be seen well enough to
determine whether the singer was actually a Blue-winged or one of the
other forms of "winged warbler" such as Golden-winged or Brewster's. A
male Black-and-white Warbler was seen carrying food for the young.
Field, Song, and Swamp Sparrows were singing loudly. Two Savannah
Sparrows and 3 Bobolinks were among birds found in fields. More
details on the birds can be found at http://ebird.org/ebird/vt/view/checklist?subID=S18793096
