This morning, about 16 participants enjoyed excellent weather in a
postponed bird walk organized by the Thetford Conservation Commission
and held at the Crossroad Farm and the contiguous Taylor Floodplain
Preserve in the Post Mills section of Thetford, VT.
Some highlights among 52 bird species found during the walk included a
Common Loon calling while in flight, an Osprey, a nesting pair of
Killdeer by their nest, a Spotted Sandpiper, a calling Alder
Flycatcher, a Common Raven mobbed in flight by American Crows, 3
species of swallows including Cliff Swallows nesting at the farm, a
singing Brown Creeper, Veeries, a flock of Cedar Waxwings, 9 species
of warblers including Northern Parula, a Savannah Sparrow at close
range, and a singing Purple Finch. After the end of the scheduled
walk, an additional species, a Black-throated Green Warbler, was heard
singing at the farm. Special thanks go to coleader and eBird compiler
Peter LaBelle, to hosts and guides Tim and Janet Taylor, and to the
Thetford Conservation Commission and especially Connie Snyder for
enabling a splendid morning afield.
