Five of us took a chance last evening (4/23) on seeing woodcock
displays in Hanover. but unfortunately conditions were not suitable,
and no woodcocks were detected. A combination of temperature in the
40s, wind chill in the 30s, a few sprinkles, and gusty winds provided
a set of conditions which proved to be not conducive to display by
woodcocks. Around dusk we did hear a background chorus of spring
peepers, those frogs being relatively tolerant of cool spring weather.
The forecast for the same time tonight (Thursday evening 4/24) is
slightly better than last evening's, but the temperatures are to be
similar and winds not yet subsided sufficiently to anticipate that
woodcock display will occur. We regret any inconvenience caused by the
cancellation for tonight.
Please note that morning bird walks free and open to the public are to
be held on Saturday April 26 at Mink Brook in Hanover (arranged by the
Hanover Conservancy) and on Sunday April 27 at Lake Runnemede in
Windsor (Windsor County 2014 Birding Quest). Details about these bird
walks are available in the recent archives of Upper Valley Birders
