A light snow fell through most of the daylight hours today here in
Norwich village and was accompanied by considerable bird activity in
the backyard feeding area. Highlights today included a Song Sparrow, a
species otherwise undetected here in recent weeks, and a total of 14
cardinals counted at dusk, presumably about to fly to their roost.
Among the cardinals, there were at least 6 males and 6 females plus
two other individuals seen only in silhouette under low illumination.
Also here today was a Cooper's Hawk which made a brief visit during
which there was, as might be expected, almost no activity by other
birds around the feeding area. Additional species found today included
Mourning Dove (3), Blue Jay (5), American Crow (8), Black-capped
Chickadee (at least 3), a White-breasted Nuthatch, American Tree
Sparrow (2), a White-throated Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco (12), House
Finch (at least 6), and an American Goldfinch.
