This morning on arrival at Ledyard Bridge, fog was notable and skies
were overcast. Initially, there appeared to be few birds present, but
gradually, over more than 2 hours, numerous birds were found, and the
final total of 32 species, all found in Norwich, Vermont, included 10
species of warblers, but, remarkably for the location, only 1 species
of water bird (Mallards). Additional unidentified land bird species
were present, but could not be seen well enough to identify with
assurance due to factors such as distance, fog, backlighting, leaves,
or limitations of the observer. Around 9:45, as sunlight first notably
reached the ground, the temperature suddenly seemed to rise sharply.
About that time several passerines of different sizes but undetermined
species flew out of the relatively low vegetation and disappeared into
distant woodland, marking the end of an abundance of birds nearby.
Highlights this morning included 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, a Brown
Thrasher, and 4 migrant warbler species not known to nest in Norwich:
Nashville, Tennessee, Magnolia, and Wilson's.
