The campus DNS servers are getting an update in the next few days, which
will include changing the way that AFS clients look up information about
the AFS cell database servers from DNS.

All AFS clients released for the last several years know how to query DNS
in the new way, so we do not expect to have problems, with one exception:

Any client configured to use an EMPTY CellServDB file, will NOT be able to
automatically locate the authentication (kaserver) server, and so won't be
able to authenticate. At one point I was recommending this configuration
to Mac users, since it removes the dependency on a local configuration
file, but since every Mac client release replaces that file with a new
version, I doubt if many clients are still configured that way.

Windows clients are very unlikely to have been set up this way, so should
not have a problem.

If anyone has a problem authenticating, please contact Research Computing
for instructions on fixing the problem. We will be releasing a script to
automate the process.

Authentication can also be done at the command line, explicitly specifying
the authentication server to use, by opening a Terminal window and
running:

  klog AFSUSERNAME -servers halley.dartmouth.edu

- and replace AFSUSERNAME with the appropriate name.
