This is New Hampshire Audubon’s Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, April 24th,
2013.
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER has been coming to a birdfeeder on Grafton Road in
Alexandria since December 13th, and was last reported on April 23rd.
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE that has been reported intermittently since
mid-winter was again seen at the Liberty Mutual “duck pond” in Portsmouth on
April 20th.
A SNOW GOOSE was seen at Rockingham Park in Salem on April 22nd.
An ICELAND GULL was seen at Rockingham Park in Salem on April 20th.
A HOARY REDPOLL and 18 COMMON REDPOLLS were seen at a birdfeeding station in
Strafford on April 21st, and 4 COMMON REDPOLLS were seen in North Conway.
A NORTHERN SHOVELER was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on April
20th, 3 were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on April 20th,
and a pair was seen at the Liberty Mutual “duck pond” in Portsmouth on the
21st.
2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 54 GREEN-WINGED TEAL were seen at Meadow Pond in
Hampton on April 20th, and 4 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were seen at the Exeter
Wastewater Treatment Plant on the 22nd.
2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, a RUDDY DUCK, and 11 LESSER SCAUP were reported from
the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on April 20th.
Reports from the Connecticut River area in Hinsdale during the past week
included 2 GADWALL, 3 BONAPARTE’S GULLS, 1 RED-THROATED LOON, 1 COMMON LOON,
4 HORNED GREBES, 2 RED-NECKED GREBES, 12 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, 50 YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS, 12 PALM WARBLERS, and about 1,000 TREE SWALLOWS on April 19th and
20th.
3 RED-NECKED GREBES, a BONAPARTE’S GULL, 2 GADWALL, and 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL
were seen on the Connecticut River in the Hanover area during the past week.
2 VIRGINIA RAILS were seen on World End Pond in Salem on April 17th, and 3
were reported from the marshes near the Portsmouth Hospital on the 20th.
An AMERICAN COOT was seen at World End Pond in Salem on April 20th, and 2
SORAS were reported from here on the 24th.
A PIED-BILLED GREBE was reported from the Deer Hill Wildlife Management Area
in Brentwood on April 20th.
24 WILSON’S SNIPE were seen at Chapman’s Landing in Stratham on April 22nd.
2 PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen on West Portsmouth Street in Concord on April
18th, and a MERLIN was seen in Pittsfield on April 22nd.
8 AMERICAN KESTRELS were seen at the Pease International Tradeport on April
22nd.
36 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were seen migrating in Hancock on April 22nd, and
there were a number of sightings of 1-6 birds seen elsewhere during the past
week, including 1 as far north as North Conway.
A flock of 27 TURKEY VULTURES was seen in Concord on April 20th.
Small numbers of RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were reported from multiple locations
during the past week, including 6 from Errol on April 17th.
3 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Marlborough on April 21st.
A flock of 40 AMERICAN PIPITS was seen in Penacook on April 20th.
A GREEN HERON was seen in Pittsfield on April 22nd.
7 GREAT EGRETS, 5 SNOWY EGRETS, and 25 GREATER YELLOWLEGS were seen along
the coast on April 20th.
BROWN THRASHERS were reported from Hancock and Hinsdale during the past
week.
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS were reported from Hancock, Hinsdale, Exeter, and
Salem during the past week.
LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES were reported from Durham, Lebanon, Hinsdale,
Concord, and Bartlett during the past week.
2 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were seen in Hinsdale on April 21st, and 1 was
seen in Concord on the 24th.
An EASTERN KINGBIRD was reported from Merrimack on April 24th.
Early returning migrants reported during the past week included: NORTHERN
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW, TREE SWALLOW, HERMIT THRUSH, PINE
WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET,
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, WINTER WREN, EASTERN TOWHEE, CHIPPING SPARROW, FIELD
SPARROW, WILSON’S SNIPE, NORTHERN FLICKER, and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER.
