I am pretty sure that the reason my Software Update did not produce the updates is because I am using a big iMac, not a tidily thing!
I have also found out that if you launch iPhoto while holding 'alt' and 'cmd' a window appears with lots of selections for cleaning up the app. This has cured almost all my problems.
