This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, October 5th,
2011.
An AMERICAN AVOCET was discovered in Meadow Pond in Hampton on August 24th,
and had been seen continuously in the coastal Hampton area. It was last
reported from Hampton Harbor on October 1st, but has not been reported since
then.
A male HOODED WARBLER was seen in a cluster of bamboo located near the outer
point of the Ragged Neck section of Rye Harbor State Park on October 2nd,
3rd, and 4th.
A WORM-EATING WARBLER was seen on the "Boy Scout Trail" in Odiorne Point
State Park in Rye on October 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and one was seen in trees
next to the parking lot adjacent to the water tower along Route 101 in
Hampton on the 4th.
A WHITE-EYED VIREO was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on October
2nd, 1 was seen off of Church Street in Rye on the 3rd, 1 was seen on Great
Island Common in New Castle on the 4th, and one was seen along Highland Park
Ave in Rye on the 4th.
A LARK SPARROW was seen at the Concord Community Gardens off of Clinton
Street in Concord on October 2nd, and one was seen across the street from
New Hampshire Audubon's Thompson Wildlife Sanctuary on Route 113 in Sandwich
on October 3rd.
A female BLUE GROSBEAK was seen at the Concord Community Gardens off of
Clinton Street in Concord on October 3rd, and 5th.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen at the Strafford County Farm fields on
October 4th.
2 DICKCISSELS were seen at Hampton Beach near Ron's Beach House restaurant
on October 1st, 2 were reported from Warren Farm in Barrington on the 1st,
one was reported from behind the Post Office on Loudon Road in Concord on
the 2nd, one was seen at Chickering Farm in Westmoreland on the 3rd, and one
was reported from Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on October 5th.
A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen at the south end of Odiorne Point State Park
in Rye on October 1st through the 5th, 1 was seen at Awcomin Marsh in Rye on
the 3rd, and one was seen near Hampton Beach State Park on the 4th.
2 RED PHALAROPES, a RUDDY DUCK, and 8 YELLOWLEGS were seen at the
Charlestown Wastewater Treatment Plant on October 4th, and a possible
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen near the tollhouse at the base of the Mount
Washington auto road on October 2nd.
A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen in Hampton Harbor on October 2nd.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on
October 1st.
29 FORSTER'S TERNS and a COMMON TERN were seen in Hampton Harbor, and 3
CASPIAN TERNS were seen flying by Rye Harbor, all on October 3rd.
8 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were seen migrating along the coast on October 2nd.
133 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were counted along the coast on October 2nd, and
a single one was seen at Elmbrook Park in Hopkinton, also on the 2nd.
2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS were seen in Hampton on October 1st.
An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen in fields off of West Portsmouth Street,
and 2 GREAT EGRETS and a NORTHERN HARRIER were seen at Horseshoe Pond, all
in Concord on October 1st. An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was reported from
Hampton on September 30th.
3 RED CROSSBILLS were reported from Lily Pond along the Kancamagus Highway,
and 3 were reported from along Route 16 in Wentworth Location, all on
October 4th. A small flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS was reported from
Mount Moosilauke on October 1st.
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was reported from Barrington on October 1st, 7 were
reported from coastal locations on the 2nd, 2 were seen at Hampton Beach
State Park on the 4th, and one was seen at the north end of Odiorne Point
State Park in Rye on the 3rd.
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was seen at Awcomin Marsh in Rye on October 3rd and
4th. Also present on the 4th was a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, and a BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER.
A CAPE MAY WARBLER and a WILSON'S WARBLER was seen in Hampton on October
4th. A MOURNING WARBLER was seen on Great Island Common in New Castle on the
4th.
A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was reported from Hampton on October 4th, and a
WILLOW FLYCATCHER was seen and heard in Hampton on the 3rd.
A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen at Odiorne State Park in Rye on October 3rd,
and 2 YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS were reported from the coast on the 2nd.
A late-migrating CLIFF SWALLOW was seen in Rye on October 1st.
A WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was reported from Epping on October 2nd.
A GREAT CORMORANT was seen at the Pickering Ponds in Rochester on October
4th.
At the Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson, a female
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen along the boardwalk of the Mud Pond Trail
on October 2nd, a SPRUCE GROUSE was seen on the Little Cherry Pond Trail on
the 5th, and 9 BLACK SCOTERS were seen on Cherry Pond on the 5th.
8 BLACK SCOTERS were seen on the Connecticut River in Wilder on October 2nd.
Over 13,000 raptors have been reported from the Pack Monadnock Raptor
Migration Observatory in Peterborough, and nearly 10,000 have been reported
from the Carter Hill Raptor Observatory in Concord, all since September 1st.
Species reported included BALD EAGLE, OSPREY, NORTHERN HARRIER, AMERICAN
KESTREL, MERLIN, PEREGRINE FALCON, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, COOPER'S HAWK,
NORTHERN GOSHAWK, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, and RED-TAILED
HAWK. Be sure to visit these observatories this fall season to help out with
the count!
