On Saturday between 5:30-6:30 pm I observed 8-9 Common Nighthawks flying and feeding over the power lines in Cornish, NH, just off Saint Gaudens Road. They actively swooped and feed for 20 minutes before moving on. A beautiful, and first sighting this year!

As I was driving home Saturday evening (8/27), I spotted a Common Nighthawk flying above RT 5.
I pulled into someone's driveway and was thrilled to add 11 more to this sighting!
This occurred near the interstate over-pass on RT 5 south (after you pass the entrance to Clayhill Rd).

I also saw 5 nighthawks on Rte 12A West Lebanon over the intersection of Walmart/Applebee's. This was our first sighting this year. Behind Best Buy is often a good place to find them.

Subject: if you find an injured bird
If anyone finds an injured or grounded bird (from the aftermath of Irene), please feel free to call me at VINS (VT Institute of Natural Science) located in Quechee, VT.
I am one of the licensed rehabbers in the Wildlife Services Dept, and we have been getting several calls and admissions due to the storm.
And speaking of rare birds that have been "blown" in from the storm: we just recently admitted an adult Northern Gannet that was found in an open field in Hartland. We are also expecting a Storm Petrel, which is to be positively identified once it arrives.
Thanks, and I hope everyone made it through the storm safely!!

Subject: oceanic birds at VINS
We received a Wilson's Storm-petrel here at VINS today - unfortunately it was dead on arrival.
Still, this is a very interesting (and as far as I know) first time arrival here.
So far we have admitted one Northern Gannet (alive) and the mentioned petrel. Both birds were found in Hartland. I suppose I should keep my eyes extra-peeled when I go home tonight!
