This morning Dick Brooks and I looked for birds in Norwich west of
I-91, including Goodrich Four Corners Road, all of Town Farm Road, and
Waterman Hill Road to the east of its intersection with Town Farm
Road. A few highlights among 42 species encountered in about 2.5
hours, spent mostly on foot, were a Broad-winged Hawk flying close
overhead on Waterman Hill Road, a superb view of a perched and silent
Barred Owl in the woodland along Town Farm Road, a Northern Flicker
along Waterman Hill Road, and a repeatedly singing Northern Parula not
far from a small pond along Goodrich Four Corners Road. Some other
species notable for relatively loud songs this morning along our route
included Red-eyed Vireo, Brown Creeper, Hermit Thrush, Chestnut-sided
Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler,
Ovenbird, Common Yellowthroat, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted
Grosbeak, White-throated Sparrow, and Purple Finch.
