Here's advanced notice for two upcoming bird walks in a series
organized by the Mascoma Chapter of the Audubon Society of New
Hampshire.

1) River Road, Lyme, 7:00-9:00 AM, Saturday July 30, 2011. This walk,
covering as much as two miles on foot along River Road, will look for
breeding birds with their young, and possible early fall migrants, in
a scenic area along the Connecticut River. George Clark is to lead
this bird walk which is free and open to the public. Children
accompanied by an adult are welcome. Bring binoculars and scopes if
available. In the case of heavy, steady rain or thundershowers, this
walk will be canceled.

Road instructions:

[Please note that, contrary to most maps, River Road in Lyme is
presently not a through road for motor vehicles due to erosion by the
river this spring. The section of River Road now closed to motor
vehicles is south of its intersection with North Thetford Road.]

To reach the starting point for this walk from Hanover, NH, take Route
10 north to the village of Lyme and there turn left onto East Thetford
Road. Continue west until just before the bridge crossing the
Connecticut River. There, turn right onto River Road, continuing
northward over a paved section of road onto an unpaved section.
Eventually, farther north, the road is again paved, and that location,
where the road changes from unpaved to paved, is the 7 AM starting
point for this walk. Park vehicles along the river (west) side of the
unpaved road in the wooded section just to the south of the pavement.

If coming from VT Exit 14 off I-91, turn east on Route 113 and
continue through the village of East Thetford and across the bridge
over the Connecticut River. Then take an immediate left turn onto
River Road and continue as described above.

2) On Saturday August 20, 2011, the Mascoma Chapter of the Audubon
Society of New Hampshire will offer a bird walk led by George Clark
from 7:00 to 9:30 AM at Lake Runnemede and Paradise Park in Windsor,
VT. This walk is free and open to the public. Participants should be
prepared to walk as much as two miles over uneven and possibly damp
ground. Children accompanied by an adult are welcome. Bring binoculars
if available. We'll be especially looking for possible fall migrant
birds. In case of steady heavy rain or thundershowers, this walk will
be canceled.

Road and carpooling instructions: From Exit 9 off I-91 in Hartland,
VT, turn south on Route 5 towards Windsor. After going about 3 miles
southward on Route 5, look for the Back Forty guns and ammo store on
the left, with a Price Chopper supermarket just beyond, also on the
left. This walk will begin at 7:00 AM by the entrance to a long
driveway directly across Route 5 from the Back Forty store. Please do
not drive into that driveway, vehicular use of which is reserved for
local residents. Parking is available along Route 5.

Carpoolers from towns around the Hanover/Norwich area are to leave
from the River Road commuter parking lot in Norwich by the Ledyard
Bridge at 6:30 AM that Saturday.
