Yesterday (May 1) I spread some oven-sterilized egg shells in the
woods near where a Wood Thrush nested last year. We have heard that
the Wood Thrush especially needs a source of calcium. This morning
at around 5 am, a Wood Thrush was singing (heard from our bed). I
think I will spread some more shells.
Other new arrivals today were a Black-throated Green Warbler at
Storrs Pond at noon. Also two Winter Wrens were singing on the
entrance road to Storrs Pond.
Yesterday at Herrick's Cove, new for us this year were a
Chestnut-sided Warbler, Ovenbird, Pine Warbler, Palm Warbler,
Blue-grey Gnatcatcher, Great-crested Flycatcher and a Green Heron.
On Saturday at Montshire Museum, there was an Osprey flying over the
river and several catbirds in the shrubs next to the trail.
